Decorating with Pantone Colour of the Year 2020 – Classic Blue

Surface View Blog / 13 Jan 2020

The colour of the year for 2020 has been unveiled and it’s a cool Classic Blue. Described as ‘a timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity.’

The beautiful shade is said to ‘bring a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit, offering refuge.’ Summoning visions of stretching oceans meeting cloudless skies, Classic Blue offers relaxing and restful qualities.

Blue has been an important colour in art and decoration since ancient times. Historically blue was one of the most expensive colours to produce. Homes which were decorated in blue reflected an abundance of wealth. Since then blue has become more accessible but the popularity of this colour has continued to soar. Walls have been decorated in anything from powder blue and duck egg blue to more recently dark blue tones such as Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue and Stiffkey Blue.

Bringing connotations of mindfulness and peace, Blue is a calming and reflective shade. Decorating your bedroom, living room and bathroom walls in Classic Blue can stimulate these powerful moods and create a more pleasant atmosphere.

Decorating with Classic Blue in your Living Room

Smart and sophisticated, introducing Classic Blue into your living room creates a warm and inviting space to cosy up in. Blue works on both large or small scales - for light touches, add accents of Classic Blue into your room with our framed prints and canvases.

Or take a different approach and update your window treatments with our Classic Blue frosted or clear window films. An unexpected design detail, window films not only inject some colour into your room but also cover unsightly views and provide some privacy.  This gorgeous window film takes a vintage Cyanotype print from the Natural History Museum Collection and scales up to tremendous effect.

If you’re looking to create more of a statement, our mural wallpapers make the perfect feature wall. Made to measure, go as large or small as you like. This stunning delicate design from the Michael Angove Collection captures falling Clematis in incredible detail. Working in both contemporary and classic homes, this gorgeous blue design is reminiscent of Pantone’s Colour of the Year Classic Blue.

Decorating with Classic Blue in your Kitchen and Dining Room

Possibly one of the most popular colours for kitchens and dining rooms, blue is a classic choice when it comes to these key rooms in the home. Incorporate colour into your kitchen and dining room without it becoming overwhelming. Choose a rich and deep toned blue to adorn your walls or break it up with pattern and illustrations for a more subtle look.

Whether a gallery wall or larger framed prints are to your taste, this versatile wall art is an opportunity to reflect your personal style in your home. We love this supersized Snake framed print from the Natural History Museum collection. The vintage illustration captures the curves and scales of the snake.

Pattern is a great way to include Classic Blue into your room. Our range of made to measure roller blinds come in both standard and blackout options. Ideal for kitchens and dining rooms, blinds add interest and privacy to windows without the window treatment becoming too bulky or distracting.  This gorgeous pattern from the Warner Textile Archive Collection was originally a paper design and is now available in all of our bespoke interior products.

Decorating with Classic Blue in the master bedroom and guest bedrooms

Boasting calming and relaxing qualities, Classic Blue is an obvious choice for master bedrooms and guest bedrooms. Channelling serenity and peace,  make a statement with blue and choose a feature wall mural wallpaper.

Blow up vintage blueprints like this gorgeous ‘Midship Section From HMS Fearless’ mural wallpaper from the National Maritime Museum collection. Capturing details from a midship section plan of torpedo cruiser HMS 'Fearless', this incredible document dates back to 1886 and is an exciting alternative to traditional wallpaper motifs.

Choosing a Classic Blue patterned wallpaper mural will not only add a sense of calm to your bedroom but it will also bring a soothing atmosphere to your bedroom to encourage a good night’s sleep. T
