The Green Effect - Calming and Peaceful Hues for the Home

Surface View Blog / 01 Feb 2022

There’s no doubt that the pandemic has had a profound impact on the way we view our homes and living spaces. With people aching to be connected to the outside world whilst confined, bringing a sense of serenity inside using a hint of green can help us reconnect with flora and fauna.

Biophilia

Biophilic design, bringing the outside in, has been trending for some time now and we wrote about it last year, explaining how to embrace this movement into your space.  (https://www.surfaceview.co.uk/blog/bringing-outdoors-in-with-surface-view) Green is the greatest, most obvious colour associated with nature and works well with biophilic design. Whether you go for wild walls with a mural like ‘Willow Bough’ or something more muted and calming such as ‘Bamboo’, both from the brilliant V&A collection, these varying shades and leafy designs will leave your home feeling refreshed.

Beautiful Greenery

If you’re wanting to add just a hint of green to your décor, then why not look at a stunning floral canvas art print or wall hanging. ‘Bull Bay’ depicts a superb magnolia created in 1743, perfectly balancing the delicate and the bold. The serene creamy colour of the flower and the luscious green of the leaves will give you something to view in wonder for years to come. Alternatively, a vibrant pop of pink surrounded by verdant leaves in The Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Paeonia Suffruticosa’ would hang beautifully in any room and be a striking wallpaper mural accent wall with the complementing greens, pinks and yellows.

Green Horizons

Looking across a landscape can evoke a sense of discovery. Using soft and pale tones of green within these pieces will leave you feeling ready to embrace the wonders of the world. The landscape piece by Joseph Mallord William Turner ‘Margate by the Sea’ shows the white cliffs of the town only just visible on the horizon. The soft blends of green create a dreamy and enchanting painting that would make for a stunning wall hanging for you to gaze at and plan your next escapade. For a more modern take on a landscape, the beautiful birds eye view map of London, ‘Chart of London City’ creates an almost calming view of the bustling city through the soft hues of green.

How will you explore and restore with some green in your home?

From timeless classics such as ‘Camellia Chinoiserie Wallpaper Fragment’ to illustrations of dancers in ‘A Group of Dancers’, there are hints of green for all. You can go bold and use a wallpaper mural to bring this trend to life in your home or add a nod to green through a canvas art print or wall hanging. However you are inspired, Surface View has a piece of art to restore your natural equilibrium. Take inspiration from our Green Interiors collection or peruse through collections such as The Royal Horticultural Society or the New York Botanical Garden and allow yourself to embrace nature.
