A glass vase mounted upon a silver-gilt base, standing on a marble table top, holds an arrangement of roses, tulips, poppies, hollyhocks and carnations, with butterflies alighting on the flowers and leaves, a dragonfly hovering above, and a snail crawling on the ledge. In 1663, van Aelst created some of his best and best-known works, this picture being one of them.
