Drawing of Peonies is based on a watercolour illustration of Moutan Peonies, a variety of flowers imported from China in the late 18th century. In the 1800s, British botanists and artists were very interested in studying exotic flora and wildlife. This curiosity eventually spread to the common population, which led to botany becoming a highly fashionable activity for Victorians.
