'The Surprise'

Description

Appearing to be startled by something, the young woman's pose is based on the Medici Venus, a famous marble sculpture of the goddess of love made in Greece in the first century BC. The identity of the woman is unknown. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1828. Painting by Claude-Marie Dubufe, before 1827.
